Today I thought I'd have a slightly more serious look at something that I'm pretty sure everyone suffers from
At one point or another, doubt. Normally I'm a pretty confident guy but whenever I'm prepping for a shoot those little niggles always pop up "will it go well, will I really mess up some shots"
For me it goes back to my first job after graduating university. I went straight into a small company as a cameraman and editor and if I'm totally honest it's the worst decision I ever made. Even worse than a night on every shot a bar has to offer followed by some questionable fried chicken. Through constant negativity rained down on me by the company management my confidence quickly drained away. That was a couple of years ago now but annoyingly it's something I still can't entirely shake. I get through it by taking a few deep breathes, reminding myself that my boss was a major nobhead and prior to working there I was happy with my skills.
As I said I think we all doubt ourselves at one point or another especially in an industry so prone to change but what we all have to remember is when we work on a project it's not all on you. You need to work with a team that you can trust, who will back you up. Remember everyone gets things wrong now and again but you can't let those mistakes be the only thing you think about. Most importantly if you ever work for someone who's draining your confidence leave, better to find something new now than regret it later.
I know this weekend when I'm sat on a bus for 5 hours heading to Canterbury on a shoot the doubt monster will be keeping me company but I'll keep trying to put it behind me and stay confident that I know, I know my shit.
